Real Loyalty vs. Customers Who Just Can’t Leave
Retention caused by friction or sunk cost might be useful — but it isn’t the same thing as loyalty.
Loyalty is strongest when preference remains meaningful because alternatives remain possible. Retention caused by friction, contracts, scarcity, sunk costs, or inconvenience may be commercially useful, but it isn’t identical to loyalty.
Where this stops short
Repeat activity must not be automatically labeled loyalty, and inactivity must not be automatically labeled betrayal or dissatisfaction.

The business should earn continued preference rather than merely increase the cost of leaving.
