Why Every Referral Is Borrowed Credibility, Not Free Marketing
Part of the advocate’s own reputation gets placed behind every recommendation they make.
When one person recommends a business to another, the business receives an opportunity it didn’t create alone. Part of the advocate’s credibility is placed behind the introduction. That credibility should be treated as borrowed, not owned — the business still has to earn direct trust through its own conduct.
Where this stops short
A recommendation isn’t proof that the advocate controls the referred person, speaks for a community, or guarantees an outcome.
What this means in practice
Referral handling should protect both the new relationship and the advocate’s credibility.
